Introduction

The Brecon Mountain Railway Trek is an all day, multi faceted adventure. You get a taster of mountain walking and paddling, as well as a chance to enjoy the historic Brecon Mountain Railway.

Start the day at our centre, where you will meet your instructor for the day. Your instructor will then take you to Pant Station to board the Brecon Mountain Railway, which you will ride to its highest point at Torpantau. From there you will enjoy a scenic hike back to Dolygaer, where you will have lunch before getting kitted up for the next part of your journey. After lunch you will canoe across the Pontsticill Reservoir to the Ponsticill station, where you will catch the train back to Pant Station.

BMR Trek

The Brecon Mountain Railway is a scenic train ride that follows the old Brecon and Merthyr Railway line that closed in 1964. The engine that is currently used is a restored steam engine that was originally used to haul limestone in South Africa.

This ride offers some truly stunning views of the Ponsticill and Pentwyn Reservoirs as well as the hills of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

After disembarking from the train, your instructor will lead you on a beautiful hike back to Dolygaer. You will again enjoy stunning views of the Beacons.

There are various routes that you can take and your instructor will lead you on the perfect one for your group at a pace that everyone will be able to enjoy.

Once at Dolygaer you will have lunch and may want to enjoy a tea or coffee in our cafe.

After lunch you will get kitted up with the appropriate gear. Your instructor will lead you to the Reservoir and the group will enjoy a paddle across the gorgeous Ponsticill Reservoir to Ponsticill Station where you will catch the train back to the starting point.

Along the way, your instructor will help teach you some basic paddling techniques and make sure everyone has an enjoyable trip.

FAQ

Q: Do I have to buy a train ticket?

A: The train ticket and all transportation from Dolygaer are included in the cost.

Q: What do I need to bring?

A: For the walk: A spare fleece, or jumper, 1 litre of water, and snacks. Hat, gloves. (Sun hat in the summer, Woolly hat any other time as it can be quite cold on the hills and gloves all year round). If you own your own waterproofs our qualified instructors will check that the seams are taped and suitable for use in the mountain environment (Waterproofs can be borrowed from the centre). Sun cream is also an essential if you are spending all day out on the hill.

For the paddling: Change of clothes, towel, and a drink.

Q: What do I need to wear?

A: For the walk: Warm stretchy clothing, jogging bottoms, (man-made fibres) such as thermal tops, football tops and fleeces. A good pair of thick socks.

For the paddling: A swim costume or underwear under the wetsuit, a pair of trainers with a good sole on and a pair of shorts to wear over the top of the wetsuit. All other kit is provided. In summer months, shorts and a t-shirt may be the best for canoeing as you don't get too hot.

Q: What ages are allowed?

A: All ages are allowed to join us, though children under 6 might not be able to do the paddling on the reservoir as they need to fit into our buoyancy aids.
