Introduction

Learn the traditional skills of Bushcraft at Parkwood Outdoors

We offer the perfect introduction to essential bushcraft skills such as shelter building, fire starting and knife work. Bushcraft is a great activity for all the family. Bushcraft is naive to all countries, though it is particularly popular in Scandinavia, where children are encouraged to explore woodland areas, build shelters and learn to use a bushcraft knife from a young age.

Recently, TV explorers, such as Ray Mears and Bear Grylls, have helped to make bushcraft into a very popular activity here in the UK too meaning there has never been a better time to learn some of these skills for yourself!

Activities

One of the absolutely essential skills for surviving in the outdoors is being able to construct a suitable shelter that will keep you safe and dry overnight. There are several ways of sheltering yourself, from very basic natural hollows and dips to the complex multi room log lean to and log cabin. But the simplest, quickest and most effective way of erecting shelter is to use a Tarp. With our expert instruction we will have you there in no time!

Young children, in particular, love building shelters outdoors, as their imagination turns the shelter into some fantastic places, which they then take great pleasure in describing once they have been built.

Everyone enjoys fire starting and it's perhaps the skill that is most closely associated with Bushcraft and survival outdoors in people's minds. We use flint and steels to light a variety of natural products or char cloth to start the fires.

It’s an art in itself to get the fire going but everyone always shows excellent determination to succeed, and there is always the thought of hot chocolate or roasted mashmallows as an end result to help spur you on!

Knife work teaches you how to fashion the tools you need to prepare your makeshift camp and as such is another essential survival skill.

Under our expert instruction you will learn how to make feather sticks, which amongst other things, will help your fire to start to really go, once the natural product or char cloth is alight. You will also be shown how to use the Bushcraft knives correctly to get maximum benefit out of each stroke.
